At
the confluence of the Passumpsic, Moose and Sleepers’ rivers in
the beautiful Northeast Kingdom region of Vermont lies St. Johnsbury,
home of Xylografi Press. Xylografi Press is an artist run printshop creating
unique notecards, Stationery, and ephemera. Everything offered by Xylografi
Press is an original art print of Dave Glentz Brush. These hand-pulled
prints combine relief printing, the most ancient of print techniques,
with centuries old letterpress“technology” to create edition
quality mailable art pieces. These miniature prints have a wonderful tactile quality given by the ever so slight impression created by letterpress printing. Image and paper are unified by the pressing of ink into paper. The images are designed and then hand carved into blocks of wood or linoleum. They are hand-printed one at a time - one color at a time - on a cast iron circa 1880s Chandler and Price Pilot press. All text printed is from handset wood or lead type. Each piece is imbued with “life” of its own as human touch is present in every stage of production, from the cutting of the paper through to the packaging in an archival protective enclosure. Masterfully executed prints such as these will appear uniform from the first print pulled to the last, if not identical to the eye. Yet, one hand pulled print will never be exactly the same as another. It is the subtle nuances of ink and pressure that give each print its individual character and beauty. In this day and age as communication becomes increasingly more impersonal, the simple act of writing a card or letter to someone you care about is all the more meaningful. The sentiment is increased by writing your note on beautiful handcrafted card or Stationery sheet. Even a casual correspondence to say hello can be elevated to a treasured keepsake. www.xylografipress.com |
